When I was 25 years old, I took a decision that, without knowing it, changed my life. At that moment I learned how important was to do what it feels right and say no.
Back then I didn’t work or study. Besides, I lived with my parents. I was having a hard time.
Before I had had some jobs as a salesman, but I quit, or they fired me for lack of motivation. I felt lost.
Those days I was just spending days doing nothing while I get fat. I didn’t care about anything, and I didn’t have any goals.
My father offered me his job
In that moment of uncertainty, my father was going to retire.
He worked in a family company which was on the transport of metal pieces.
He had worked 20 years in that company. Because all of that my father thought it was a good idea that I “inherited” his job.
I remember that when I was a kid, I went to visit my father a couple of times. I had a strange feeling being in that huge warehouse full of metal with nobody else around.
So my father worked alone in that place which was located in an industrial area far from the city. He left early in the morning and came back in the evening.
He spent the whole day there with nobody else except when a truck came to take or leave metal. Which happened one or two times a day.
My father told me that it was a safe job. That I could make a living because it was a good company. He insisted a lot that I should have taken the job.
I thought about it for a few months. However, even in that dark moment, I knew there was something else waiting for me.
That I could do something more important with my life.
It is interesting how we unconsciously know certain things. Too many times we don’t listen to our inner voice. It is a big mistake.
I can’t imagine what my life could be if I would have taken that job.
By the way, that company doesn’t exist anymore.
