- How did I quit drinking alcohol? This is the typical question that people always ask me. Especially at bars, where it is more than obvious.
They see me drinking water and they can’t help asking:
“What is wrong with me?”
Many people don’t understand how I can go out at night and not drink. I don’t blame them, I didn’t understand it either.
On the other hand?
Some people really appreciate the fact that I don’t drink alcohol.
I get tired of answering this question over and over. As a result, sometimes I don’t explain myself. I just say that I don’t drink, that is all.
Then I get different reactions. Some people look at me with a sad face. I can see in their eyes that they are sure I was an alcoholic and that is why I don’t drink anymore.
Other people assume I have a terrible illness. And of course, alcohol is not compatible with the medication. The human mind has a lot of imagination.
When they are really concerned I offer them a complete answer. But normally they say:
«No, no, no. It is ok. You don’t need to explain it.»
It makes me laugh. Who knows what they are thinking? Probably nothing good.
Why don’t I drink alcohol?
Around 7 years ago I began to do more exercise and to eat better. As a result, my body changed inside and outside.
Before that, I used to drink some wine and beer occasionally. The first thing that started to make me feel bad was wine.
Even one glass was too much for my stomach. Then it happened with beer but less. So I cut it down to one beer on Saturday night.
And finally, I totally quit. Somehow I didn’t decide to quit drinking alcohol. My body did.
Anyway,
I think it is great to not drink. Especially when traveling alone. It is not advisable to drink or at least to get drunk.
You are in a foreign country and you don’t know what could happen. You can’t count on someone you just met to look after you.
As I always say, each person should decide for oneself.
If you want to drink, go ahead. Personally, when I was a teenager, in my case from 16 to 25 years old, I used to get drunk most weekends.
So I am not one to tell people what to do. Quitting alcohol has helped me to stay away from some problems but not from all of them.
During my trips, I have had some love adventures that I wrote in my book “Stories of Love and Sex around the World“.
