When I was a teenager, I had the temptation to jump from the top of my building. The idea crossed my mind several times. I even got ready to jump.
I finally gave up, thinking that the landing on the ground would be painful. It was 12 floors all the way down.
For a long time, I thought I had suicidal tendencies. Fortunately, when I began to travel, I realized I simply like jumping but surviving after all.
My highest jump
It was in Indonesia. I jumped from a cliff 13 meters high, landing in the sea. I was petrified before I decided to do it. I spent a good few minutes thinking about it before I jumped the first time.
I had to perform a trick of the mind to be able to do it. Just before I jumped, I felt peaceful, with no fear. As a result, it was my best jump.
The second time, for a reason I don’t understand, my mind filled with negative images. That made me jump in a horrible way.
When I hit the water, I had my arms open, and the impact left me without air. I could not breathe for a moment. I thought I was going to die.
But I am proud and stubborn, so I wanted to jump again. The third time it was ok. Not great, not horrible. I felt I needed to jump this last time not to keep the fear with me.
I thought three times was enough. Just two people jumped with me the first time. They did not try again.
I realize many things I have done are to overcome my fears. We have to do it. Otherwise, fear controls us and limits our life. Personally, I believe fears have ruled my life for decades.
Many times I did not do what I wanted because of fear. That is why I understand the importance to fight against it.
The Best Jumps
Since I have begun traveling, I have jumped from amazing places.
– Like this one in Devils Marbles, Australia.
This time, the people around told me I was crazy. The rocks are 8 meters high.
If you fall, you could die or get terribly hurt. But I did not care.
But I did not care.
– A jump from the
top of a boat to the sea in Halong Bay, Vietnam.
This jump was my first one from a high place. Before this, I had jumped only from 3 meters high.
You can feel the difference from up there.
I am not sure if I would have done it alone. At that time I was with friends, and they gave me the courage to do it. The first time it was strange, the feeling of having nothing under my feet.
The second time was easier. From the 6th until the 14th time I enjoyed it like crazy.
– A jump from a rock to the ground in Champagne Pools, Australia.
I should thank the person who took the photo. It seems I am flying.
With Photoshop I could look like Superman.
Let me know if you could do it.
– A jump from an enormous rock to the sea in Koh Tao, Thailand.
That small thing in the middle of the photo is me.
Perfect timing.
Only one shot needed.
– A jump from a trampoline to the sea in Koh Samet, Thailand.
This one was not dangerous however it was one of the most painful because I landed on my back.
I couldn’t breathe for a few seconds but my life was not in danger.
In other words, just do it.
Thanks to being fearless I started a career as an author and I wrote my book Stories of Love and Sex.
